Chapter 10 - Lewis

It was a week before he saw her again. He’d be lying if he said he hadn’t spent the whole week actively avoiding her. Waking up early to slip out before the sunrise, coming home late in the hopes of avoiding her in the lobby… despite what Franklin had said that night, something deep inside him was terrified of what might happen if he saw her again, if whatever strange electricity that had brought them together that night was allowed to ignite again. The creature inside of him, the monster that had brought him and the world around him so much suffering… it was still there, he knew that much. A little disoriented, perhaps, by what had happened, but regathering its strength. Waiting to strike. Waiting for him to be distracted long enough to allow it to tear itself free…

So he focused everything he had on staying away from her. He avoided the balcony, avoided the elevator, avoided any common area in the building where their paths might cross. And when he heard her voice through the thin walls that separated their apartments, he gritted his teeth and took it as an opportunity to practice hardening his heart against her.

Not that he bore her any ill will… and if he was honest, learning about what had driven Fletcher to do what he’d done had gone a long way to helping him heal. In the end, Fletcher had been a victim of an abusive leader much like the rest of them, though it had manifested in different ways.

But he knew that Roxanne still felt terribly guilty about bringing Fletcher back into their lives. And if he tried to tell her what was going on with him, about the strange darkness that had dogged his steps ever since he was a child… well, she was going to take it personally. She was going to assume it had something to do with Fletcher. And he didn’t want to add that to the long list of things he had to worry about.

So instead, he fobbed her off. Made up an excuse about work being particularly exhausting at the moment, about not sleeping well since the move… lies that had just enough truth in them to be convincing. After all, work had been exhausting… mostly because he was
